Before we even knew what antioxidants were, we knew we were supposed to eat our fruits and vegetables and all food good for us. There are some antioxidants however, that we just don't hear much about that are every bit the antioxidant as some of their more popular cousins.
Spices
If I were to ask you what the natural antioxidant in an apple pie is, you might say, "Why the apples of course," and you would be right. However, if you make apple pie the way I make apple pie, those apples wouldn't be the only antioxidants. That's because like most apple pie makers, I add cinnamon and cinnamon is an antioxidant.
Of course, we don't consume cinnamon in the quantities that we consume apples or other natural antioxidant fruits and vegetables, but once you know where to find other sources of those disease-fighting, free radical busting natural antioxidant containing foods it's easier to consume a variety of them. Besides, there are different kinds of antioxidants that perform different functions so it is very important to get the widest variety that we can.
Herbs
Say you decide one night at dinner to just not worry about eating healthy that night. We all do it, more often than we should. I like to go crazy with spaghetti with rich, thick spaghetti sauce and garlic bread slathered with butter. But guess what? Since I know that oregano is a natural antioxidant, I make sure I add that to my bottled spaghetti sauce while it's simmering on the stove and I also drop some fresh chopped tomatoes in there. So even when I'm bad I'm good.
Since I'm fudging a little, ok a lot, tonight I want to make sure I am incorporating some healthy eating into my "fudge" Now since cooking enhances the natural antioxidants in some foods and diminishes them in others, it is a perfect time to cook the tomatoes and keep the carrots in my salad raw.
Knowing wild blueberries contain just about as many natural antioxidants as you can get in any one food, I can feel ok with a blueberry muffin for dessert.
Even when you are consciously eating healthy, adding spices and herbs that complement your meals can add not just more, but different antioxidants to your diet. You can be getting all the benefits of one kind of antioxidant but completely missing the benefits of other kinds so it is important to consume as many of the different natural antioxidants as possible. Look at your pantry with renewed interest and discover what you can add to your healthy diet while enhancing the taste too!
