You may not think of antioxidants when you first think of blueberries. I don't. I think of blue berry muffins, blue berry cheesecake and my favorite, blue berry pancakes. However, if you eat blue berry antioxidant laden goodies, you are taking a big step toward protecting your cellular health.
It's all about the Cells
Cells aren't usually a big topic, even among conversations centered on health, or the lack of it. Yet, damaged cells can lead to all kinds of terrible diseases, among them, cancer, heart disease, strokes, diabetes and several age-related diseases as well.
Unfortunately, cell damage is a fact of life. Cells become damaged during normal bodily functions such as metabolism. This is when free radicals are left behind and it is the free radicals that damage the cells.
Thankfully, there is a remedy. This is where antioxidants come in and by eating blue berry antioxidant rich foods this remedy doesn't have to be a difficult one. Antioxidants play a vital role in our overall health. They repair and sometimes even prevent the cellular damage that leads to these diseases.
Some antioxidants actually remove the free radicals from our cells and some antioxidants prevent them from entering our cells. Vitamins C and E are antioxidants as is beta-carotene which the liver later turns into vitamin A.
Most healthy people can get all the antioxidants they need from eating a healthy balanced diet. Some people who have certain medical conditions which inhibit the absorption of some vitamins and antioxidants may need an antioxidant supplement. While there are many to choose from, it is wise to talk to your doctor before you take any dietary supplements.
Blueberries, Beans or Bust
There are many different kinds of antioxidants as well as many different foods that contain these disease fighting warriors. Most, but certainly not all antioxidant rich foods are fruits and vegetables. Some foods that contain antioxidants are the kinds of foods that most of us don't particular enjoy but we eat because they are good for us. By eating and drinking blue berry antioxidant laden goodies, it becomes less of a chore to take care of our cellular health.
It's not so bad sometimes to throw caution to the wind and combine blueberries with sinful goodies like cheesecake and ice cream. But we can also stay in check by tossing a few blueberries into our breakfast cereal or fruit salad. Blue berry antioxidant rich muffins are a great on the go food when we're in a hurry.
Next time you're baking or looking for a break from the norm, look around your kitchen and see what you can add a few blueberries to. You may end up inventing a new dessert or a refreshing blue berry antioxidant rich drink. Remember the good you are doing for your cellular health. If you don't like blueberries at all, remember too, that beans are also antioxidant rich foods.
