What To Expect When You Google Antioxidant Formula

I thought it would be fun to Google the words antioxidant formula just to see what's out there. I didn't know if there was a product by this name or if this is just a catch-all phrase or what. To tell the truth, I sometimes take issue with dietary supplements including those named antioxidant formula because I believe, for the most part, that we can get all the antioxidant protection we need from a healthy balanced diet.
I realize there are times when supplements are indeed necessary and that's why I wanted to see what I would find. So here are the results of my little experiment:
One Example
I first looked at Renewel Antioxidant Formula, 30 tabs from Source Naturals for $8.95 That's the last one I looked at also as it had so many ingredients listed that it took some time to sort through them. For one thing, just as a matter of practicality, I want to know about every ingredient listed. I want to know what it is, where it came from and what it purports to do for me. I also want to know if there are any side effects or any drug interactions because I, like millions of others take maintenance medication.
Contrary to some, even dietary supplements can interfere with prescription and over-the counter medication. I would not be able to pick this supplement up in the drugstore because there are so many ingredients listed I would need to look everything up if I were to consider this product. Now, since I found this antioxidant formula online, I certainly have the option to do my homework before I order it and that's exactly what I would do were I considering ordering this product.
One thing I've never understood about any of these dietary supplements is that for some of the ingredients, like some vitamins, the percentage of daily values seem to be in the hundreds or even thousands percentage points more than what is recommended. For example, in this particular antioxidant formula, the percentage of the daily values of vitamin C is one thousand six hundred and eighty percent, which is more than 16 times the recommended daily value for this vitamin.
Why so Much?
Maybe someone could explain it to me but I don't understand why a supplement would include 16 times the amount of vitamin C needed. I'm not too concerned about toxicity with vitamin C because it is a water soluble vitamin and the excess would be excreted through urination and perspiration but why is the excess there in the first place? Since the recommended daily value for vitamin C is only 60mg, why does a supplement offer 1000 mg? The safe upper level of vitamin C for an adult is 2000 mg a day within a combination of diet and dietary supplement.
Since the excess vitamin C is eliminated through urination, there's not a great risk for toxicity unless too much is taken at once but my concern is with a list of 20 or more ingredients who is going to take the time to look them all up and find out how much they should be getting or which ones interfere with particular medications they may be taking?
If we're taking supplements just because we're too lazy to eat right, then we need to back up and not only look at what we're taking but look at the antioxidant formula in the foods we're eating. We may find we don't even need a supplement and even if we do, we must take responsibility for our own health and discuss with our doctor whether or not we need to be taking any dietary supplement and if so, which antioxidant formula is right for us.
