Understanding Antioxidant Dietary Supplement Information

It depends how badly you want to understand it. It depends too, on the supplement. It's not too hard to understand the information on a single antioxidant dietary supplement label but the ones that include multiple supplements are a bit of a challenge.

Know Your Medications

Have you ever known someone who takes prescription medication and has no idea what they're taking but knows that they are supposed to take the "little pink pill twice a day?" If you're one of those people, that needs to stop immediately. It's important that you understand the medication that you are taking, why you are taking it and any potential side effects. Before you even take an antioxidant dietary supplement you need to make sure it won't interfere with any prescription or over-the-counter medication you are taking.

Suppose you are one of those people that know both the brand and generic names of every medication you take, have assessed the known side effects and determined that taking this medication is indeed in your best interest. Bravo! Realize though that that same diligence should also apply to any antioxidant dietary supplement you decide to take.

Supplements

For one thing, you'll need to determine if you actually need an antioxidant dietary supplement at all. The way you can determine this is simple: Find out, either by visiting with your doctor, which is always recommended before taking any supplements, or look at the recommended daily values table for each supplement. Take vitamin C: It's almost difficult not to get enough vitamin C through the diet. Look at the recommended amount and look at the food sources from which you get vitamin C.

You're going to either need Google or a medical student nearby for this exercise but once you understand what and how much of it your body needs, it will answer many of your questions about antioxidant dietary supplements.

Water or Fat Soluble

Another very important thing for you to understand about any dietary supplements is whether they are water or fat soluble. The reason this information is important is because this makes the difference whether or not these supplements are eliminated daily through urination or stockpiled in your system for later use. Vitamin C, for example, is water soluble, as are all the "B" vitamins.

Knowing this, you should understand that it does no good whatsoever to take vast amounts of vitamin C which is one of the antioxidant dietary supplements. Whatever amount your body does not use daily will be eliminated through urination and perspiration. You cannot stockpile this vitamin supplement. Therefore, if you determine that you are indeed getting enough vitamin C in your diet, you will now understand that for this particular supplement, you will not need to take it.

Talk to Your Doctor

There are instances where for some people, especially those with certain medical conditions, their bodies are not able to absorb some of the vitamins and minerals in the foods we eat and for this reason they do need an antioxidant dietary supplement. You may have your own issues that dictate whether or not you need dietary supplementation. Unless you're prepared to go through every supplement you are thinking of taking and break it down in this manner, you should consult with your doctor regarding the potential use of such supplements.

Actually, that's not a bad idea. Do consult with your physician before you embark on any dietary supplement program.
